Baxter Springs is known for its rich history and was once a notorious frontier town. During the Civil War, it served as a trailhead for wagon trains going west, and it was also an important stop on the Chisholm Trail. Today, Baxter Springs is a quiet community with a population of approximately 4,000 people. It's home to several historic landmarks, including the Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum, which tells the story of the town's past. Baxter Springs is also the site of the 1863 Baxter Springs Massacre, one of the deadliest attacks on Union soldiers during the Civil War.
